Commercial vs. Open Virtual Classrooms (Navigate 2.1.3)

As we continue our conversation about the benefits and necessity of synchronous learning in the online classroom, it's important that we evaluate the resources available--and the cost associated with those resources--to provide these synchronous learning experiences.  In this post (Navigate 2.1.1), we reviewed the advantages and disadvantages of a number of synchronous learning software available to educators.

It's imperative, too, that organizations consider the cost (both to the organization and to the individual user), the amount of bandwidth required, and the specific features of each software before making a selection.  For a school that serves a student or students who are vision impaired, for example, the audio recording features may be essential.  Finally, organizations should bear in mind that "free" can be misleading.  Some of the software for the open source options may be free, but could require the work of an IT department to maintain, which could be costly.

I still prefer BigBlueButton to the other software because of its features, ease of use, and cost (or lack thereof).  What software do you believe is the best fit for your organization?
