Roles and Functions in Online Learning Environments (Navigate 1.2.1)

For an online learning environment to be successful, each member must understand his role and responsibilities.  Below are brief descriptions of the roles of the members of the online learning environments:

Role of the Teacher

The teacher's role in a learning management system includes:

• Accessing student data through the student information system (SIS)
• Grading assignments and giving useful feedback
• Communicating with students, parents, and administrators
• Monitoring student progress
• Analyzing student data to target specific student needs
• Personalizing instruction for students

Role of the Facilitator

The facilitator's role in a learning management system includes:

• Approving registration and course selection
• Developing appropriate content
• Organizing payment data
• Communicating with teachers, parents, and students 

Role of the Administrator

The adminstrator's role in a learning management system includes:

• Overseeing records
• Supervising teachers' moderation of courses

Role of the Student

The role of a student in a learning management system includes:

• Adhering to course guidelines and deadlines
• Communicating with teachers to seek help when needed
• Managing time effectively
• Registering for the appropriate courses

Role of the Parent

The role of a parent in a learning management system includes:

• Providing an environment in which the student can learn
• Appropriately monitoring student's progress in courses
• Communicating with teacher or administrators when necessary
• Assisting student with coursework when possible
