Define and Explain Learning Object Authoring Tools (Create 4.1.1)

To create an authentic learning environment that is engaging and fun for students, teachers may elect to use online learning objects in which the teacher can deliver content or assign tasks that use media to appeal to the student and reinforce learning.  Many of these tools are available for free, while others may require a small fee.

Some of the free learning object software includes:
  • Smore allows the user to create online flyers simply and easily.  There are different types of flyers and the user can insert different types of media into a flyer as well.  The free version of Smore is sufficient for most users, but for more features the cost is between $20-100 per month depending on the services required
  • CamStudio open source software allows user to create high-quality videos for free.  Teachers could use this source when developing course materials, and students could use it when demonstrating proficiency in a content area.
  • Dipity is an awesome resource for an English or history classroom that allows the user to create a digital timeline.

Other interesting learning object software that is available for purchase:
  • Articulate Storyline is a powerful tool that could be used for coursework ranging some the simple to the complex.  Some of the features available are drag and drop interactions, quizzing, screen recording, and software simulation.  Articulate Storyline could be especially useful in math and science courses.  At about $1400, the tool isn't necessarily cheap, but it could be useful for larger organizations or schools.
  • What2Learn is a site that allows educators to either access games that others have created or to create games using their own content.  It's not as pricey as some others ($8 for a student account and $40 for a teacher account), but there is a cost for the software.
