Formative Assessment (Evaluate 1.1.1)

A teacher's job is not simply to deliver content to students.  It is the responsibility of the teacher to ensure that students are able to comprehend the information delivered and to perform the skills necessary to meet the standards for a particular course.  A great way for teachers to gauge students' progress and knowledge is to use formative assessments throughout a unit.  Formative assessments are usually simple methods by which students can show their understanding of a topic.  In the online classroom, formative assessments may include electronic feedback, test questions written by the students, or classroom opinion polls.

A convenient tool that educators could use for these formative assessments is a poll from Poll Everywhere.  This particular method of polling allows students to text in their answers with a cell phone.  The types of questions can vary; the writer may select multiple-choice, open-answer, true/false, or select-a-picture.  The results show up in real time as the students text in (or send via computer) their answers, allowing the fellow students and teachers to see where people are.  Poll Everywhere's approach is a great way for educators to connect with students, to receive feedback, or to measure students' understanding.  By analyzing the data from the responses, the teacher can determine which topics need to be reviewed in more detail.  The service is free, user-friendly, and practical, which makes it a great tool for any online educator.
