Digital Rights and Responsibilities (Participate 4.1.1)

When creating a digital learning community, an acceptable use policy must be in place.  The purpose of the policy is to protect the members of the community from plagiarism or bullying, to clearly define what is and what is not acceptable use of technology resources, to promote understanding of fair use, to create a safe environment for members, to encourage participation by those members, and to facilitate a sense of ownership of the community among its members.

The acceptable use policy need not be full of legal jargon that seems foreign to the student; rather, it should be stated simply and in a positive way to inform members of the expected behavior within the DLC.  Teachers should review the acceptable use policy with students and other members of the DLC at the beginning of a course, and must themselves adhere to the policy.  Students don't take kindly to hypocrisy.

Adherence to an effective acceptable use policy can help to create a digital learning community that fosters collaboration among its members.
